Population Served

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada serves an ethnically diverse population and over 90% of our “Littles” come from low to very low income families.

Length of Operation

BBBSN was incorporated in Clark County in 1973 and the national program began over 100 years ago.

Positive Outcome within the Agency

Based on the Youth Outcomes Survey, Littles surveyed after one year in BBBSN program showed a 50% increase in their sense of social acceptance by peers and a 57% increase in their confidence in school abilities.

Role in the DREAMR Project

BBBSN will match current foster youth with Big Brothers or Big Sisters volunteers. Mentors (we call them ‘adult friends’) will be carefully screened and attend specialized training, on-going educational support and regular coaching sessions to maintain an on-going dialogue for  at least 18 months focusing on the youth’s foster care experience, healthy human sexuality, academic achievement and positive relationship skills. Contact will occur weekly by phone, email or text messaging. Face to face contacts will occur 4-6 hours per month engaging in mutually agreed upon social/community activities.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada specifically aims to increase the foster teens’ chances of staying in school, achieving academically, making positive personal and social choices and sustaining an enduring friendship.
